The Italians in Chicago Project was a two-year program based at the University of Illinois at Chicago Circle, History Department, and funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities. The project's purpose was to document the Italian American experience in Chicago. Oral history interviews with 113 Italian Americans living in the Chicago area were one component of the project. Egidio Clemente was an Italian-American labor leader and professional printer who edited La Parola del Popolo. A socialist, and close associate of Domenico Saudino, Clemente's early career as a political radical became more centrist during the Roosevelt Administration. Clemente may have supervised printing for the O.S.S. in Rome during World II for psychological warfare efforts such as Operation Cornflakes and Operation Sauerkraut.
